Sona Masuri Rice, also popular as Sona Masoori Rice, is a medium-grain rice grown largely in the Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the most popular varieties of rice from South India.
Sona Masuri Rice has been cultivated in Karnataka for several decades now and is grown mostly in the state’s Mahaboobnagar district, as well as parts of Kurnool, Nalgonda and Medak districts. It was earlier believed to have been developed on an experimental basis by the Agricultural University at Rajendranagar near Hyderabad, with the help of farmers in Mahaboobnagar district by crossing the Sona with a local variety called Dumu Masuri. However, recent studies suggest that it was developed by farmers in Kurnool district by crossing a native variety named Samba Masuri.
The name ‘Sona’ means gold and ‘Masuri’ is short for ‘Masoori’ which means long. Sona Masuri has a unique aroma and taste which distinguishes it from other varieties of rice. The golden colour of the rice makes it stand out from other varieties as well.

Global Rice demand and consumption
Global Rice demand and consumption is projected to rise 1.9% per annum to 483 million metric tons in 2018, which will be valued at $488 billion. The Asia/Pacific region will remain the largest and fastest-growing market, supported by increasing incomes, rising urbanization levels, shifting dietary patterns, and strong population growth. In addition, rice will remain an important food staple in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
As a result of these and other trends, the global rice trade has expanded rapidly in recent years. Rising incomes have resulted in greater demand for more expensive varieties of rice such as basmati and jasmine in developing countries as well as among ethnic groups in developed countries. Further stimulation of demand will come from increased use of rice as feedstock for ethanol production if fuel prices continue to rise.
